Aloha from Hawaii!

While on vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii, I went into Hilo to check out the lindy scene. Lo and behold, Alison and Joel Ply from San Diego were in town! They were there for the weekend giving workshops in balboa, jazz, lindy, and Charleston. What a nice couple!

There were about 40 people at the dance. I met a nice couple from Northern California. I danced with all of the local men, and one woman -- Andy -- the dance organizer. Joel was Djing. He did a bunch of fun stuff to get people up dancing and mixing, including a social Big Apple and Shim Sham. He started the shim sham, with everyone in the room beginning at a reasonable speed. It ramped up to 220, then 240, then 300 bpm!

Alison and Joel

Shim Sham participants at 200 and 300 bpm. I'm sure you can tell which photo reflects which speed!

And, traditional dance performed at a Hawaiian Cultural Festival.
